The Best Oils For Hair Growth

If you ever searched “how to grow hair naturally”, you’ve probably seen various different oils pop up, and the list honestly feels endless, and it can get overwhelming fat.

But not all oils work the same way, and not all of them actually target growth at the root, some improve circulation. Some protect your strands from breakage. Others support scalp health, which is just as important if you are trying to grow longer, thicker hair.

After consistently testing different oils (and breaking my bank account), three stood out the most: rosemary oil, pumpkin seed oil, and castor oil. Each one plays a different role and when used properly, they can completely change the health and strength of your hair overtime.

Let’s break down what they actually do, what research says, and how to use them correctly.

Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth:

What it does:

Rosemary oil improves blood circulation to the scalp. Better circulation means better nutrient delivery to hair follicles, which may support growth. It is also believed to reduce DHT, which is a hormone linked to hair thinning.

What research says:

A 2015 study published in Skinmed found that rosemary oil preformed similarly to 2% minoxidil (a common hair growth treatment) after 6 months of use.

How to use it:

  • Always dilute with a carrier oil like joboba or pumpkin seed.
  • 3-5 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil
  • Massage into scalp 2-3 times per week
  • Leave for at least 30 minutes before washing
  • Never apply essential oil directly to the scalp without diluting.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

What it does:

Pumpkin seed oil may help reduce DHT, a hormone linked to hair thinning. It contains phytosterols, which are believed to block enzymes involved in DHT production. It is also rich in zinc, vitamin E, and fatty acids that support scalp health and help create a stronger environment for hair growth.

What research says:

A 2014 randomized, placebo controlled study published in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that participants who took pumpkin seed oil supplements experienced a 40% increase in hair count after 24 weeks compared to the placebo group.

How to use it:

  • Apply a small amount directly to the scalp as a carrier oil
  • Massage into scalp 2-3 times per week
  • Leave on for at least 30 minutes before washing
  • It can be mixed with rosemary oil as a base oil

While research on topical use is still limited consistent use may help support thicker looking hair over time

For reference this is my hair growth in 6 months after consistently using pumpkin seed and rosemary oil.

Castor Oil :

Castor oil is mainly known for protection and moisture. It is rich in ricinoleic acid and fatty acids that help seal hydration into the hair shaft. This makes it especially helpful for dry, brittle, or damaged hair.

Because of its thick texture, castor oil forms a protective layer around the strands. This can reduce breakage, split ends, and moisture loss, all of which are important for maintaining healthy, strong hair. It may also help soothe a dry or flaky scalp due to its moisturizing and anti inflammatory properties.

What research says:

  • A 2022 Cureus study on castor oil for hair care showed castor oil may improve moisture and shine and reduce breakage in hair, leading to the appearance of healthier lengths.
  • Research on ricinoleic acid confirms that it has anti- inflammatory and anti microbial properties, which can support scalp health.

How to use it:

  • Apply a small amount to the mid lengths and ends of your hair to seal moisture
  • Use as a deep conditioning treatment once a week
  • For dry scalps , massage a small amount into the scalp and let sit before washing
  • mix with lighter oils, like pumpkin seed or joboba to make it easier to spread

Because castor oil is very thick, start with a small amount and increase only as needed.

Ready to Grow Stronger, Healthier Hair

Consistency is everything when it comes to hair growth. Whether you choose rosemary oil for growth, pumpkin seed oil for DHT support, or castor oil for protection and moisture, the key is sticking to a routine that works for your hair.

I personally saw changes after six months of consistent use, and the difference was not just the length, it was also the thickness, strength, and overall health.
