If you have curly hair, you already know this: not every product is made for us. What works for straight hair can completely flatten, dry out, or frizz curls. Over time, I’ve realized you don’t actually need 15 different products. You just need the right three.

Here are the three staples every curly head needs in their routine.
A Moisturizing Shampoo:
Curly hair is naturally dry. Because of the spiral shape, your scalp’s natural oils don’t easily travel down the strand. That’s why harsh shampoos can leave curls feeling stripped and rough.
A good moisturizing shampoo should:
- Clean your scalp without making your hair feel squeaky
- Leave your curls soft, not tangled
- Contain hydrating ingredients like aloe, glycerin, or honey
The one I personally use (and love because it’s affordable and actually moisturizing) is the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo. It’s creamy, doesn’t leave my hair feeling tight, and works especially well if your curls are on the drier side.
Your shampoo sets the tone for your entire routine. If your hair feels dry right after washing, everything else becomes harder. Also, If you regularly use heavy creams, butters, or oils, make sure to use a clarifying shampoo about once a month. Product buildup can block moisture from entering the hair shaft and make curls look dull or limp. Clarifying resets your hair so your moisturizing products can actually work again. You can read more about that in my Curl Reset post.
Leave In Conditioners:
Leave ins are what keep your curls hydrated after you rinse, and they make styling so much easier. Think of it as the step that bridges your wash routine and your styling routine. If you skip this, your curls are not going to stay defined. Leave ins are very important because they:
- Lock in moisture
- Help detangle
- Soften curls
- Reduce frizz
- Prep your hair for styling
Leave in conditioner is what helps your curls stay soft past day one. Without it, hair can feel dry by the end of the day, especially in colder weather or dry climates.
For Finer Hair: I always recommend the Curlsmith Moisture Memory Weightless Leave In Conditioner because it hydrates without weighing down curls.
For Thicker or Coarser Hair: The Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk is rich and creamy, giving hydration that thicker curls love.

A Curl Cream
Curl cream is what gives your curls definition, it enhances your curl pattern while keeping them soft and frizz free.
Here are my go to recommendations depending on what you’re looking for:
- Best Affordable Curl Cream: The Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie, it is rich enough to define curls without being heavy, and it won’t break the bank.
- For Richer Hydration: If your curls are lower porosity, check out the Camille Rose Curlaide Moisturizing Butter, It is a powerhouse when it comes to moisturizing your curls. If you want to know how to care care of low porosity hair check out my post on Low Porosity Hair.
Apply curl cream in sections, scrunch towards the roots, and let your hair air dry or diffuse. Resist touching your hair while it dries, that’s how frizz sneaks in.
